Hello. My name is John Morgan Askew and I’ve been recording, producing records and scoring for film and television for the last 25 years. As well, I own and operate the recording studio Scenic Burrows, over the bridge in Vancouver, Washington. The studio is the instrument I like the most; I love sound making with weird gear, weird synths, stringed things and pedals. Although, I spend most of my time alone working, I am especially happy when i’m with other human beings in the studio making weird sounds together.
Some of the recent score projects I’ve done for film and tv include the Emmy-Nominated, HBO series Q : Into The Storm, the HBO feature film Money Electric : The Bitcoin Mystery, the Amazon 3-part series Killer Lies : Chasing A True Crime Con Man, as well as the HULU/ FX series The New York Times Presents: “Lie To Fly” and The New York Times Presents: “Weight of the World”. Askew scored the critically acclaimed feature-films, Redwood Highway (starring the great Shirley Knight and the great Tom Skerrit) and Calvin Marshall (starring the great Steve Zahn). In 2024 I scored the theme music to the podcast by Catalysta called 2 Minutes to Midnight.
As a record producer, mixer and recording engineer, I have produced, and collaborated with artists including M. Ward, MØTRIK, The Delines, She & Him, Sera Cahoone, Portlandia, Margo Cilker, Howe Gelb, Alela Diane, Laura Gibson, Casey Neill, Califone, The Dodos, The Coral Sea, Lost Lander, and Neko Case.
